My school is a K-12 Charter School located outside of Charleston, South Carolina. Our school is filled with students from all different backgrounds and varying abilities. My hope is to provide our NaviGators with a library that is warm and an inviting place to read!
Our library is the center of learning in our diverse population!
Our students visit the library often for a variety of reasons and we want to continue to serve them with a comfortable and safe place to read and learn. Our students come from a variety of different economic and cultural backgrounds, but still have one thing in common: they have the desire to LEARN! I wanted to tap into that fervor and excitement by expanding our library and creating a fun and safe place to read!
LLCS is committed to providing all students a safe and exceptional academic environment that cultivates independent learning, character enrichment, and regional awareness while developing accountable leaders, community stewards, and diverse thinkers through project-based experiences.
My Project
I want to be able to set the library up into different areas suitable for lower elementary and intermediate grades. Currently, the library has many circular tables and traditional seating. It is not an inviting space for reading. With comfortable seating that is age appropriate, students will be excited to come to the library, check out books, and research in a space that is cozy. Students read on the carpet or complete a reading task on the carpet. This is a relaxing place where students can get comfortable and read a book in their bean bag chairs. The library can be utilized as an area of the school that students feel safe to leave their classroom and come to the library to do their classwork.
These unique seating options allow students to gently rock or curl up while a reading a good book!
The gentle movement afforded by these seating options supports research proving that movement enhances focus, memory and cognitive flexibility, which in turn improves academic performance. This will encouraging students to collaborate and utilize libraries in a variety of ways that best suit their learning styles.
Flexible seating options will help my students recognize a space as their own and will give them the ability to move around without being disruptive to other students in the library. Some students are very energetic and need to wobble and move while they are reading. This even helps with comprehension! Students need anything to motivate them to read. Being able to read in a fun and exciting, relaxing place makes it all better. These materials will make a difference in the lives of all the students at LLCS and will truly create a Grand Gator Library!
