A Good Teacher Deserves an Apple MacBook for Remote Learning

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In the middle of March, I said goodbye to my students for what I thought would be a quick two weeks. We were under the impression that when those two weeks were over we would be reunited and we would pick right back up where we left off. The two weeks came and went with no word on when we would return back to the comfort of our classroom and school. We continued remote learning as we had been doing for so many weeks prior. Then we heard the devastating news. The governor announced that schools would remain closed for the rest of the year.
Our hearts all broke at the fact that we would be forced to talk and learn through a computer screen.
Even though we can see each other through video chats, it isn’t the same. There are no high fives in celebration of a job well done or comforting hugs to brighten sad faces. Instead we are forced to look at one another through a cold, emotionless computer screen.
My Project
Each day I wake up and have to connect an external camera to my outdated laptop to record and present lessons to my students. I pray that my computer does not crash because I have opened one too many tabs while trying to navigate the world of online learning. These two items are my only means to connect with my students during remote learning. However, the outdated laptop and the external camera provides many challenges in the current technology-driven way of teaching. These challenges, I feel, have limited my ability as a teacher to fully address the needs of my students.
With this new MacBook I could easily record and edit videos of my lessons.
Doing this will allow me to provide my students with the best opportunity to learn new material. An updated computer would mean less lag and video freezing when I am working in real-time with students. Even though my constant freezing has provided many laughs for myself and my students. This MacBook will help keep students engaged because they will not have to wait for something on my computer to load or my video to unfreeze.
Also, this new MacBook would help me connect with families better. I would be able to video conference with parents to help address any concerns. Also, I would be able to provide them with guidance and reassurance, something that many families need right now.
