I am a fourth grade teacher at a south-side Chicago school where all of my 17 students are receiving free lunches. I am begging you wonderful, amazing donors to send me a guided reading table. What is a guided reading table you ask...and why on earth do I NEED one so badly? A guided reading table is a U-shaped table. The teacher sits in the U and the students sit outside of it. Because of this seating arrangement, the teacher can easily talk with each student, monitor each student, and the students can easily communicate with the teacher and each other. I need one of these great tables so badly because (a) my school does not have enough money to provide them for all teachers and (b) fantastic donors have donated guided reading books to my class and now I am itching to begin...but I can't until I have a table. I don't even have extra desks that I could pretend were a guided reading table and I KNOW nothing will get done if we sit on the floor! And (c) guided reading tables help facilitate rich discussion among students, and makes it easier for the teacher to lead because she does not constantly have to get out of her seat and walk around to each student. All she has to do is lean over and she is RIGHT there. This table would be used EVERY day in my classroom during our reading workshop time. I would meet with 2 guided reading groups a morning - or 8 students each morning - for 40 total minutes. This is a table that can also be used for small groups to work at so as to keep their noise level to a minimum and to help them become more comfortable communicating with each other. This is in essence, a multi-purpose table that not only would let me begin guided reading, but would also be helpful in all subjects that I teach. All I would need for this project would be a guided reading table...I can supply the chairs, students and everything else. Please make this come true - my students NEED NEED NEED individualized attention in reading more than even they realize and this will get the process started.
