Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Reading Coach so I have the amazing opportunity to work with students across the grade levels at our school. I teach lessons in Kindergarten through 5th grade as well as pull small groups of struggling readers.
Despite the challenges our students face in and out of school, they are sweet, hard-working kids and each year they grow as learners.
We are a Title One school. We have a large percentage of ELL students and migrant students. Our students struggle with language acquisition, vocabulary and reading.
My Project
I teach students in several different grade levels and these books will appeal to many different classrooms. These picture books will be perfect to try out our reading skills and strategies during class read-alouds and independent reading. Often when I teach a skill or strategy to a group of kids I then let them choose a book they would like to read to practice in in their own. Having a variety of high interest picture books makes this more successful. These picture books will engage students and get them excited to be better readers. One of the most difficult part of teaching reading skills and strategies is getting students to apply them in their own reading. These books will put our students on the right path.
