This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
On a typical day in my library students browse books, spend time in our maker space area working with manipulatives, playing board games, working on the LEGO wall, using our laptops, working on homework, and many other activities encouraging individual or collaborative student time. My library is a safe haven for all students as some students see middle school as a hectic environment. I want to offer an inviting environment to my students, a place to encourage creativity, a place that is welcoming, a place that is comforting. I want to offer flexible seating.
I have the pleasure to serve as the Media Specialist for a Positive Behavior Support School in a low performing middle school in a lower income community.
It is a Title I school of 768 students. Demographically it is made up of 85 percent African American children with 100 percent of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch. I am in a school where the principal is a strong advocate of student guided learning with flexible choices for student comfort and concentration.
My Project
Everyday I have students who do not sit still in a traditional chair, they just can not do it. Concentration and movement go hand in hand. Being proactive stops a lot of student/teacher issues.
Coincidentally, I want to offer seating choices for students to move and work and give me the very best they have to offer without the limitations of a 4 legged chair.
Flexible seating allows student to take more control of their learning. They almost always make better choices, interact better with peers, behave more appropriately, and get more quality work done when allowed to choice seating that best meets their needs. Never should restrictions be placed on a student’s work ability because of the choice of seating. By having flexible seating I know my students’ growth will exceed expectations.
