Help me give my students access to nonfiction books to help build their interest in reading and their background knowledge in information as most of them are not privileged to experience it through travelling but through books!
My students are creative, thoughtful and international-minded. They are active and love challenging assignments which allow them to see outside the box! Each day, they come to school excited to be risk takers in owning their own learning. Many of the struggling students in my class have difficulty writing informational pieces because they lack the resources and background knowledge to enhance their comprehension to a higher level. Most of them can only find fiction books to read. Having nonfiction would be an asset!
Many of my lower students in my classroom have difficulty writing informational pieces because they lack the background knowledge and experiences from not having the necessary resources such as nonfiction books in the library at their levels. Although most of my students grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where there is easy access to museums, and parks; most of my students are not privileged to access these and of such school is their only hope to learn things about animals. Having the Guided Reading Collection from 'Kindergarten to F'; will encourage my students to shine through reading. Just recently one of my student in my class even told me she has never seen a movie with a tiger or lion before. This is my main reason for choosing the 'National Geographic Readers,' because it's all about animals and this can enlighten my litten one's curiosity. This really hurt me to know that in such modern times there are kids who are still lacking the resources and means to strive. Having these nonfiction books will enable them to not only write great informational pieces, but it will also allow their comprehension and background knowledge to grow. My classroom motto is, "Labor for learning before you grow old. Cause learning is better than silver and gold. Silver and gold will vanish away, but a good education will never decay." They believe, and so do I! Please give them a chance to shine!!
