Our students, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders, attend a public high school, and the majority of students, approximately 50%, live in poverty. We are a small school of less than 600 and approximately 60% of the students are open enrollment, leading to less funding from the state.
We have a diverse population of students, as many students from the big city seek our school for greater opportunities.
When given the right tools, my students are excited to learn and grow. They are amazing! They are the future.
My Project
Every year there is a Global Read Aloud where teachers and students come together to share in chosen texts. One of the choices this year, The Marrow Thieves, is a high school level text.
This text will enhance our dystopian literature unit as well as create the ability to collaborate with students around the world through various digital platforms.
This will allow students to have a different audience and purpose in their work while examining a cleverly crafting dystopian text. By adding an audience that reaches beyond the classroom, it will give the students an authentic audience which should motivate them to put more effort and creativity into their work. They learn the importance of editing and revising as their work is seen by a larger group than just the classroom teacher or daily classmates. This will give them a real-life experience that will carry into their everyday lives as they continue on in education as well as after they graduate. In addition, we need to store the books safely in bins to increase the longevity of the books.
