Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are middle school students in a low income school district. All of the students in my school receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many of the students in my classroom do not have the proper personal hygiene products and/or clothing for school.
Unfortunately, many students come to school in dirty clothing, with uncombed and unwashed hair.
I am hoping to begin a giving closet in my classroom filled with basic personal hygiene products for my students, along with some school supplies.
My Project
How can we expect our students to be alert and ready to learn when they are coming to school without their basic needs being met? I would like to prove a giving closet in my classroom filled with basic hygiene products and school supplies for students in need.
In this closet I hope to have deodorant, travel sized bottles of shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and basic school supplies.
The items in this closet will be available to students with no questions asked. They will be allowed to take what they need to care for themselves. All the student will need to do is ask me if they can go to the closet to get an item they need. They will be welcome to come to my classroom between classes, on my planning period, or at the end of the day so they can get items in private.
I hope to be able to begin this project this school year and keep it going until I retire one day. I hope to add more needed items as necessary. I will monitor the closet and refill as needed.
