In the spring, my fifth grade students will be studying the Industrial Revolution, a fascinating period of time in our nation's history. The story of the Industrial Revolution is often seen through the eyes of the great inventors. I would like to present the era from all sides, by also bringing the voices and experiences of workers who toiled away in the factories into my classroom. Lyddie, a historical fiction novel by Katherine Paterson, tells the heroic story of a girl who worked in one of the Lowell, Massachusetts textile mills. Acquiring a class set of this wonderful book would bring our Industrial Revolution unit to life! One student stopped in the middle of a social studies lesson last year and said, "Our text books were published in 1997 - that was a long time ago!" Indeed, our text books are outdated, and supplemental materials are few and far between. I have access to limited supplies with which to teach the entire social studies curriculum, much less the Industrial Revolution. Reading the story of Lyddie would enhance my students' learning and engagement in the subject. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal. It is generous people like you who make my job possible. Without the donations of individuals like you, my classroom would lack many of the materials I need to create an inviting and exciting learning atmosphere.
