As a 3rd Grade teacher of an Eagle class (Gifted and Talented) at P.S. 217 in Brooklyn, New York, I am constantly looking for materials and resources that will provide the valuable enrichment these children crave.
Our school is extremely large with some grades having ten classes to a grade. Almost all our students receive free lunch and we have a substantial ESL population.
One thing I have learned over the years is that I can never have enough books in my classroom library. The children have a thirst for literature and the knowledge it brings and I am constantly trying to provide them with more materials in our library. However, it is difficult for me to purchase many books on my own. Buying books individually at stores becomes extremely costly. Books that are provided to me, although good quality literature, are not always at the advanced levels on which my children read. I also would like to provide more variety in the genres of literature that I have in my library as my children are encouraged to do many independent activities for enrichment and having the materials in the classroom is essential to facilitate this goal. It is not always feasible for the children to make trips to the library and I definitely do not want the children having to go and buy books at a bookstore if I have any way of providing them myself.
