This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The music room at our minority-majority school services 487 students, with many countries represented and over 12 languages spoken. We are a Title I school, and 78% of our students on free and reduced-price lunch.
Instrumental music is treasured by our students because it allows them to express what they feel when they just can't find the words!
My students are used to using a variety of instruments in my classroom because it helps break down any language barriers, and is accessible to a variety of learners. However, during the pandemic, we will not be able to share instruments. Therefore, we need individual instrument bags in order to stop the spread of germs but continue the spread of learning!
My Project
This year, my students will not be allowed to share instruments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these restrictions, I know that we can still engage in music making, it just might look a little different! All materials inside of the instrument kit are able to be easily sanitized. However, students will not share their kit with other during their music rotation.
Each instrument kit will contain an egg shaker, a pair of plastic cups (used for drumming), jingle bells, and a scarf for movement activities.
Even those some of these materials are not actual instruments, who says we can't get creative?! Music can be made from materials all around us, and that is exactly what we hope to do this year in our music room.
