I teach 7th grade at Truman Middle School, where all of my students have been impacted by Hurricane Katrina. My school, which is underfunded to begin with, is going through a rocky year because of Katrina stress. Sadly, my school has no novels to teach the 7th grade English students. I am hoping to teach the novel A Gathering of Old Men, by Earnest Gaines, because it deals with racism in Louisiana. Nearly 97% of my students are racial minorities. This book would be a great opportunity for all the students to learn about bias incidents and to discuss every day choices we can make to live in a less prejudiced society. To achieve a class set of the novel, we'd need about 30 copies. Currently, we have 8. With a donation of 22 novels of this book, all 115 students will have the opportunity to complete a unit on this very profound novel. Thanks!
