Our school is very unique in its design. Students are challenged by our reading program that allows the students to learn at their level and to be pushed to go further and further in their abilities. Our school has a two-acre garden that the students are able to plant, care for, and eat the vegetables that they grow themselves!
We have the coolest school in Northwest Ohio!
I have my students for two years. I start with them in third grade and take them all the way through fourth grade. Some students I teach again for reading for fifth and sixth grade. I really get to know the student when doing this. Science is a favorite of all my students. I am a firm believer in bringing science alive in the classroom and out of the classroom. I do everything I can to develop the science skills of my students through hands-on activities in the garden to STEM activities in the classroom.
My Project
Our students use our two acre garden to grow vegetables, herbs and perennials. We are in the process of repairing and replacing some of our beds in addition to having some raised beds be dedicated to families at our school. This project will allow five students to adopt a bed, fill it with soil with help from fellow students and then plant with seeds and plants that they choose. These students will learn how to care for their plants along with the other students in the class and then will work with their family members through the summer to raise their vegetables and enjoy their vegetables at home.
The students at our school learn to grow their own food and we are developing our school garden into year round endeavor.
Our goal is to increase the number of students at our garden through the summer. The five additional beds will allow us to do this. Pair the five beds with school events that we will have through the summer and we will be continuing our students science education through the summer.
