Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Being a student in an inner city school cannot be easy. Over 90% of our students are considered 'free or reduced lunch" so we are fortunate to provide all of our students 2 meals at school and one snack to take home. Since hunger is a huge problem in our community, our students need extra help in the classroom and at home. Our school also is very diverse in culture. I am fairly sure all of our students are bilingual with our school speaking 40+ different languages.
I am blessed to have taught 6th grade at this urban school and now enjoy being the librarian.
I love that I get to be a smiling face everyday for these students. At our school, the future is a big priority. We spend several hours a week goal setting and strategizing on what their future will look like. We are a community determined to create a better generation.
My Project
Students need an outlet to be problem solvers in a safe environment. This will get them socializing, and learning new words while having fun. The Lego mats will be a base for creating Lego structures on the walls. Rage and Phase 10 are two fun card games where students will need to follow directions and communicate well with each other. Takenoko and Kingdomino are games where students will have to use critical thinking skills along with soft skills to compete.
Students learn best when they feel free to explore and feel safe.
I am creating a safe environment for students to learn about themselves and learn important soft skills that they will use in the world.
