I teach sixth and seventh grade at a fabulous, inner city school in Michigan with a diverse, multicultural background. We are unique in that we are the first school in our area with a private and public partnership with community businesses. This relationship provides additional opportunities to expose students to what our community has to offer them after they graduate.
Middle school covers so much more than content; its a critical time in a child's development.
My middle school team and I loop with our kiddos for both sixth and seventh grade, meaning we have two years with our students to build and foster positive, meaningful relationships. During those two years, we work tirelessly to encourage growth not just in their academic goals, but on a fundamental level. They are transitioning from elementary school to high school, which comes with it's own set of social and emotional challenges. The increased amount of responsibility, classwork, and expectations must be guided with structure and compassion.
The mix of innocence and maturity is unique to middle school and makes everyday both challenging and meaningful. Help me help them reach their potential both socially and academically.
My Project
My students are fantastic and like most, thrive on a variety of learning experiences. These experiences range from seating options, movement in lessons, collaborative discussions and incentives.
Kinesthetic learners are engaged learners.
Supplies like individual white boards, clip boards, lap desks, ball chairs, chart paper, floor cushions, etc. allow for increased movement and creative lesson planning. No longer are they tied to their desk with paper and pencil!
Creative, active lessons include projects and presentations, something my kids love! It's so impressive to see what they can create when provided with a little guidance and a whole lot of options. Poster board, glue, colored paper, art supplies and technology tools are some of the basics that allow for research and hands-on creations.
With all of the hard work students put into their learning, I love to reward them with earned time for community building. So many of my kiddos love to play games and build their friendships and I love that it helps improve their social skills with their peers.
