In the upper grades, discussions about diversity often arise in literature and history classes. In Pre-Kindergarten, we talk about our differences through books as well. However, this concept is often more abstract than a 3-5 year-old can understand.
One of our most important learning areas is our “Dramatic Play” area of our classroom. Children are actively “cooking,” serving “food,” and “fixing” areas of the kitchen with various tools. Children use this area to “test-out” different adult occupations, roles, and relationships.
This is the perfect area to reflect on our similarities and differences. Children benefit from seeing themselves as valued in the classroom and in society. Our classroom is very diverse in terms of ethnicity and ability. We serve both children “at-risk” for academic failure and those with identified disabilities.
Please help us reflect upon the diversity of our classroom in our “Dramatic Play” area by helping us purchase ethnic play foods and dolls that reflect the students represented in our classroom. In addition to ethnic diversity, these dolls also reflect the diverse physical abilities of students in our classroom, school, and community. The dolls have wheelchairs, braces, canine companions, and glasses. Our full day children will also benefit from having “A Friend Who Looks Like Me” to snuggle up with during naptime.
