My Students

“The secret of good teaching is to regard the child's intelligence as a fertile field in which seeds may be sown, to grow under the heat of flaming imagination.” - Dr. Maria Montessori, 1937.

Our school is a Title I Montessori school in the inner-city of Indianapolis with a diverse population of learners.

I have the privilege of working with 22 magnificent 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders in a Montessori classroom. My students are inner-city, high-poverty children who are embarking on their journey as Montessori learners. My students come from a variety of neighborhoods and therefore bring various experiences to the classroom. They are compassionate children who have a thirst for knowledge.

At school, I work to ensure that my students' educational needs are met, but I can't do it without the help of the community supporting our next leaders, innovators, and thinkers. Montessori's philosophy is that children learn best through their innate drive to learn new things, and we provide this with hands-on materials and the cosmic approach.

My Project

Practical life activities are one of the unique components of a Montessori classroom. Practical life activities allow children to develop concentration, responsibility, and independence. This project gives my students the opportunity to care for our environment in more ways than one. Children will not only be caring for fresh flowers and vegetables but also keeping the environment clean. My students relish the opportunity to help maintain the beauty of our classroom environment. Caring for our classroom environment is one avenue that my students take on their journey towards independence and responsibility.

“The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence." - Maria Montessori.

With the materials in this project, my students will take on responsibilities such as caring for vegetables, caring for flowers, and cleaning dishes that have been used for a snack. Completing these purposeful tasks gives children a fulfilling experience. When we return to our classroom in the fall, I would like to give my children the space for a fresh start in developing independence.
