My math classroom is located in a small rural East Texas city, and our public school is the very heart of our town. We are a Title I school where about one-third of our students are on free or reduced lunch. The students entering 4th grade are in the intermediate school, and they are usually very excited (and nervous) about the new environment and the new experiences it brings.
I firmly believe in our district motto: We believe in ALL students, ALL the time!
In my classroom, I encourage students to explore and search for ways to solve problems--not only in math, but in their daily life experiences. They come to me on various academic levels, and my goal for them is not only to show a progression in their learning, but for them to also feel successful and to take ownership and pride in their learning.
My Project
The items that I am requesting for this project will help to reinforce the concept of team/family in our classroom through participation in the school-wide "beach/tropical/ocean" theme.
It is important for my students to feel comfortable in an atmosphere where they spend the majority of their day.
Decorating my classroom with the school theme boosts student morale and helps to let the students know that they are a part of a larger family. The beach balls will serve as decorations, but they will also be used to reinforce math skills. I can write multiplication facts, decimal numbers, and fraction equations on them. As the balls are tossed around, the students will answer the problems indicated by their hands when catching the ball. The Mahvelous Tape is the only tape I've found that will work to hold the decorations/posters/borders in place for long periods of time. (It's very discouraging to return to school on a Monday and all of your posters, etc. are on the floor!)
My students love to sit or even lay on the floor when working, and the lap desks will give a hard surface to work on. The stickers are used for the following: as positive reinforcement on graded work, as small rewards for active participation during class discussions, and sometimes just to make a student smile. The other supplies are just for general use in the classroom.
