This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a classroom that serves students with varying disabilities in a small group setting. I was blessed with the honor of teaching this class and this will be my first time in a lead teacher role. I am excited to see what's to come. The program serves students in Kindergarten-Second grade in a school that has a high population of families that are economically disadvantaged.
I love the students I serve and their families and could not imagine my life without either of them.
My students have various academic, social and cognitive delays but can communicate and interact in a peer group of students of the same age. They have various sensory needs that can be met by having access to materials and supplies that feed these needs, but are expensive or difficult for us to come by due to limited funding.
My new classroom serves 12 students. My students are quirky and fun. We laugh and learn together every day. They love learning new things and are intrigued by everything. They love music, art, and animals. My goal is to create an organized, comfortable, visually stimulating, sensory friendly, alternative learning environment to facilitate learning for all.
My Project
I have been charged with leading a classroom of students with varying degrees of special needs. The general supplies I have requested will go a long way in filling the gaps we sometimes encounter at this time of the school year...especially the glue sticks.
We are also requesting fish counters and magnetic ten frames which will give us fun and imaginative ways to tackle math as we add and subtract.
The letter stamp kits and ink pads will offer a fun alternative to writing with a pencil and paper as students are learning letter sounds as well as working with words. These will be especially exciting for my kindergarten students!
