I teach at an elementary school in a rural area of Northern California. My school is in the middle of a neighborhood that unfortunately is not always the safest place for students to play. So, when they are at school, we do our best to make sure the students are safe, loved, and in an encouraging learning environment.
Hearing more than one language spoken in my kindergarten room is an everyday occurrence.
My 24 kindergarten students come from a variety of backgrounds and all are eager to learn new things daily. Many of my students come from low income homes as the majority of my school is on free and reduced lunch.
My students LOVE listening to stories. This is very exciting to me as language arts and reading is one of my favorite subjects to teach. Seeing Kindergarten students learn how letters make sounds, and sounds make words, and words make stories is amazing and something that I want to encourage every day!
So, creating a safe and welcoming learning environment is key to their success. Having a learning area for the kids to meet at is a terrific step in this direction.
My Project
I believe I have move classrooms about 10 times over the past 15 years due to classroom changes and school construction. And although I have continued to be at the same district and school, with each move I have rolled up and moved my classroom area rug. This has been such a wonderful resource for the students as a meeting place, learning place, and soft spot to work. As you can imagine after so many years, the rug is looking a bit "used". Kindergarten students are not always the cleanest, neatest, and careful with bodily fluids and liquids. So, although I clean the rug myself quite often...it needs replacing. My current school is again under construction which means I again get to pack up and move in another month and a half. And while we are moving into a new classroom, I would also like to have a new rug for the students to use as well. This resource will not only brighten up the new classroom but will be vital in our classroom management and organization.
