Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a STEM magnet middle school in Indiana. This means that my students chose to come to our school to learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
My 7th graders and 8th graders come from all around the city to form a community where we focus on our core values of rigor, community, relationships, and drive.
Ninety percent of our students receive free or reduced priced lunch. Through innovative programs, we are showing some of the most rapid growth in the state as measured by standardized test score improvement. Instructional time is essential to maintaining and increasing our level of growth in the classroom.
My Project
Through Ruby Payne's lens and her extensive research on teaching students impacted by poverty, I would like to use these books in small groups with my colleagues to design an equitable framework to better meet the needs of our students.
All students deserve an environment and an educational framework that supports their academic needs.
We are a school that accommodates a population of many students living in a culture of poverty. While the physical impact of poverty on students is often easily seen, the impact on learning is not always as apparent. Students find the greatest success when the whole student is supported and planned for.
