A Fraction is a What? Using Manipulatives to Help Fifth Graders Make Sense of Fraction Concepts

The cost of the FractionWorks Grade 5 Program from ETA/Cuisenaire is $469, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

Close your eyes and picture yourself sitting in a fifth grade mathematics class. Your teacher writes "1/2" on the board and explains, as she holds up two halves of a construction-paper circle, that "1/2 is half of a whole." She then writes "1/4" on the board, folds the half-circle in half, and says, "1/4 is half of 1/2." Although you are frantically copying the numbers into your notebook, you feel lost. Over time I have learned that students grasp fraction concepts better when they see fractions represented in different forms through engaging, hands-on activities. Unfortunately, I must rely on paper-made visuals (that tear easily) to teach fractions because my school lacks the financial means to supply me with adequate resources. Over 90% of the student body receives free-lunch as well, so their families cannot donate money to offset the cost of supplies. In order to bring the concept of fractions to life for my students, I am asking for a Fraction Works set, made by ETA/Cuisenaire. The set consists of a wide variety of materials to help students visualize and attach meaning to fractions so that they can later perform more complex operations, such as addition and subtraction of fractions. The set also includes math games and multiple choice assessment questions to help students apply what they learn on standards-based tests. My young mathematicians and I thank you in advance for your generosity.
