My students need flexible seating and sensory tools to help enrich their learning. Many of my students have difficulty focusing and tools like ball chairs and bean bags to provide an alternative to sitting in a desk.
The Choices classroom is a self-contained classroom that consists of 16 students. The students in my classroom receive extra support in academic areas and support with social emotional development. We have 16 students in our classroom in grades 5 and 6. As students make gains in their social and emotional development they begin to try small chunks of their day within the general education environment.
In our classroom we set goals and celebrate student success.
We are working on building skills that range from taking a break when students are frustrated to building friendships/relationships. We access the general education content in different to allow the students to be successful and learn in a way that meets their needs.
My Project
Flexible seating will allow my students to make the choices that work best for them. During work times they can choose a tool in the classroom that works for them. Many of my students have a diagnosis of ADHD or Autism and will benefit from flexible seating in the classroom. The sensory tools like water beads and kinetic sand will allow students to take a break and refocus and return to their work.
We are also asking for a subscription to Scholastic News to enrich our social studies lessons in the classroom.
Scholastic News provides great visuals and helps teach social studies concepts in a different way.
