Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We would like to create a fitness center for our students. We are a small underfunded high school with limited athletic facilities. The student population we serve is largely overweight and inactive. In our fitness center, we will help students develop individual exercise and nutrition plans.
In order to do this, we need carefully chosen equipment to maximize the space available. At present, we have a few benches but that is about all. We do not have any weights or bars. We would like to eventually buy some type of cardiovascular machine to help the students lose weight.
Finally, the room that the school has provided us was formally a classroom, so for correct lifting and exercise safety techniques, we will need to install a rubber matted floor.
This project will benefit our 350 students by providing a space within our school for them to exercise under the supervision of their teacher. I am a a first year physical education teacher who is responsible for working with the entire student body each semester.
Park East High School is a small high school in East Harlem. We have long been considered an undesirable, failing high school, but over the last few years, the school has dramatically turned around. We are proud of our college enrollment rates and active school community.
