Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an eighth grade science teacher in a middle school in Upper Manhattan. The school is a mixture of Latino and African American students. The vast majority receive lunch aid assistance. We will be soon studying ecology, and I would like to introduce examples of ecosystems in the classroom. An aquarium would be an excellent way to make ecology come alive in front of their eyes. My students could see different life forms, such as plants and fish, coexisting in a thriving environment. More importantly, they will be taking care of the aquarium with my supervision. In this way, they can see how important good care and responsibility is to maintaining the environment. During our study of ecology, they will keep a weekly journal of observations of the aquarium. This money will go a long way for the 150 students that I have. We live so close to water in Manhattan, but the students hardly see it or experience what the rivers and oceans offer. This will give them the opportunity to see a glimpse of just that.
