I am a mathematics teacher at a continuation high school that services mostly junior and senior students. These students are deficient in credits but still have the desire to improve their skills, overcome their mistakes and be able to get a high school diploma. The school is ethnically mixed and services a low economically disadvantaged population.
The students have low math skills and need remediation, as well as the opportunity
to receive their 30 math credits towards a diploma. One of the advantages of teaching at a continuation school is that lower class size; an emphasis on the basic curriculum, more time for students to process information, individual attention and frequently reteaching concepts allows the students to be more successful than in a traditional classroom.
I am requesting an Elmo because it allows us to project pages from books, papers, or students work on a screen or the board. This device catches the students’ attention, allows them access to information and gives them an opportunity to present or correct work in a nontraditional way.
The greatest advantage for me is that I do not have to use an overhead projector which can be blinding to me or the students. They constantly need bulb replacement and needlessly use transparencies which affect the environment and deplete our nonexistent budget. I can focus on pages directly from a book. It is especially important when presenting graphing information and showing relationships in math. It helps students to make connections.
This would be important for these students because it gives them access to equipment that is not in the budget of a small campus. Most importantly it gives students a venue in which they can present their own work, correct others work and focus on concepts using a completely different focus. It will help them attain their goal of receiving a high school diploma.
