Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ninety-one percent of the students at our school participate in the free/reduced lunch program and 35% are also English Language Learners. We have a large deaf and hard-of-hearing and autistic population that struggles in the area of language arts. Their hearing affects their ability to understand language, which affects their ability to speak, which affects their ability to read and write. We also have a preschool mixed population that have communication delays. On top of this, they may speak another language at home or grow up in an environment that lacks the support that they desperately need.
My Project
My students need materials that will help them expand their limited vocabulary. Children with hearing loss, autism and learning disabilities struggle to understand the complexities of spoken language and rely on pictures to help them understand spoken language. The books, the dice game and ink for printing vocabulary pictures will be an exciting and fun way for them to learn the power of words.
Can you imagine not being able to understand what people are talking about?
My students need highly visual books that are simple, yet interesting so that the books will grab their attention and before you know it, they will be learning! The instructional dice can be filled with printed pictures of vocabulary words that are from these high interest books. The ink will allow us to print these new vocabulary pictures for each book and allow my students to learn and have fun at the same time!
