Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves over 900 students in grades K-8 who live in a historic area of the city. Our staff consists of teachers who are dedicated to instilling our motto of "Si se puede" (Yes, we can) in all students.
Music is new to the school, and the community is excited about the variety of musical opportunities being provided to them.
This is the second year of having a music education program which promotes creativity while meeting National and State Standards in Music Education. My goal is to provide students with a variety of music making experiences while strengthening our school and neighborhood communities. All students deserve to be provided with the opportunity of discovering what music means to them through music making activities.
I believe music can be one way to bring a group of people together. It is a way to define your identity, something that students of all age groups can use to express themselves. Offering creative outlets provides balance to people of all ages, at home, work and in the community. Music education has a positive impact on students' personal and professional lives.
My Project
With grade levels ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade, the creative music making experiences vary throughout the day. The materials in this project are basic necessities which will be used in our classroom to support a variety of learning for the many years ahead.
The write and wipe pockets and cardstock will be used for literacy activities and the Avery stickers will assist older students with ukulele and guitar fingerings.
These classroom materials are things that we will use every day in class. The write and wipe pockets will be used to practice our note reading skills, and will save on the cost and environmental impact of printing and copying hundreds and thousands of sheets of paper. The cardstock will be used to create icons to practice rhythmic and melodic reading in the younger grade levels. Using a laminator will allow us to use them over and over again. Finally, the Avery stickers are something that we need to replenish as time goes on. Stickers on our ukuleles and guitars are constantly falling off. They help students with different chord fingerings while we jam using Four Chords, UkeOke and other Modern Band curriculum.
