A Fabulous New Literacy Curriculum Needs Your Help!
My students need 28 copies of the novel "Holes," 10 Thesauruses and numerous classroom supplies to bring an incredible new literacy curriculum to life in the classroom.
Over the past two year, I have tried to create the best learning environment possible in order for my students to gain the tools they need to be successful on and off the reservation. Please help me make an incredible new literacy curriculum that will accomplish this goal come alive for my students!
I teach 50, 6th grade students on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota.
My students are 100% Lakota and have a rich and vibrant culture. However, due to isolation and intense poverty, our access to basic classroom supplies is very limited. We are on a 100% free and reduced lunch plan that helps with the food needs, but many classroom teachers are forced to buy basic classroom supplies, such as notebooks and pencils, on their own dime. But my students deserve an excellent education just like any student in the United States. Please help me make this possible for my students.
After two years of searching for the best possible literacy curriculum for my students, I have found it. The curriculum is called SpringBoard and it is a college preparatory curriculum through CollegeBoard. CollegeBoard is the creator of AP and SAT exams. As a result, CollegeBoard designs SpringBoard to prepare students from grades 6-12 to be successful on these tests and have drastically higher chances of getting into, and succeeding, in college. Through a grant, I have been able to acquire this curriculum for my students. Now, to make the curriculum come alive I need the requested materials.
The book 'Holes' is one of the final units in the curriculum. Without this book that entire unit will be nearly impossible to complete. The three movies provided are utilized for clips that help the students visualize different aspects of characters we are reading about from a different medium. And all of the supplies requested are to help make literacy centers and creative projects come alive.
My students deserve the best learning experience possible, gaining the necessary tools to go to college, succeed and return to make the changes the community needs.
Through creative, hands-on learning, this curriculum pushes students to a whole new level of learning. The curriculum draws on personal experience and the change students want to see in the world. By making learning personal, students will be invested at a whole new level, achieving literacy goals at higher rates than ever before!
