A, E, I, O, U, and Why? Language Acquisition in Second Grade.
My students need phonics and early literacy materials for all levels of learners. This proposal includes books, technology resources and skill building games.
I'm very lucky; I have a classroom of unique, intelligent, and inquisitive students. I am a second grade teacher at a high-needs charter school that caters to a community of immigrant and refugee families.
Our community of learners hails from five continents, speaks 10+ languages, and varies in age from seven to nine. The socioeconomic level of my classroom is very low - most of my students receive free lunch and the majority of their parents work full time.
My students deserve the best this world has to offer, but often, due to lack of funding for our school, receive mediocre materials. I have been trying to build our classroom resources, and have come to Donorschoose.org as a way to supplement our learning materials.
This year, I encountered a new challenge in teaching my students. The first day of school, it became clear that one of my students was unable to read, and could not spell his own name...
Although we generally cater to the local population, many of our students are new to the US, and vary in ability levels based on their previous schooling experiences. For the first time this year, I've encountered students who need daily, explicit, early language skill building.
Our school uses a fantastic Balanced Literacy program which supports small group instruction with the teacher, and small group reading lessons. Much of the student learning is self-directed in small cooperative groups.
The only issue? Providing engaging, hands-on, and level-appropriate materials for each of my students. From learning their A-B-Cs, to decoding complex phonemic patterns, I hope to challenge my students to build skills while having fun!
How can I reach all learners?
We can reach them with interactive, stimulating, language resources that bridge auditory, visual, and kinesthetic gaps in small group instruction.
By acquiring the requested materials for daily classroom use, my students will be able to choose from beginning phonemic sound and alphabet study cards, phonics books, puzzles, and interactive listening centers.
These materials will empower my students to help themselves advance their skills, while allowing me to meet individually with students of greatest need.
We can do it!
I have faith in the ability and will of each of my students. I know that with the support of donors, these resources will be greatly loved, well-used, and help my second grade students achieve!
Please help us to build our learning library and support language acquisition at all levels!
We appreciate your time, and thank you for considering our project!
