My multicultural students need to read the "Dozen Multicultural Books Every Child Should Read." Help us bring this collection to our classroom.
My students are first graders in an urban area.
Most are eligible for free or reduced priced meals. The school is a small one, a place where we can really get to know our kids. Many students come to school without a solid foundation in literacy. Our students really want to learn, we just need to create the environment for this to happen.
My Project
We've requested a dozen books from a list of multicultural books that every child should read. The books contain an assortment of characters and themes that represent the diversity of our classrooms, our school, and our world. We will use the books to demonstrate to our students that people of all races and nationalities made important contributions to the world around us. We've selected books including Tar Beach and I Love My Hair! I believe these books will excite and engage my students in reading in a new way.
The achievement gap between children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and those from more affluent backgrounds is getting larger all the time.
This project will help me to give my students the chance they need to be better at reading!
