Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach block periods of ELA and Social Studies where I get the privilege of truly getting to know the incredible, energetic students that live in this community in which I teach. My students are coming from the heart of the Puget Sound representing the rich diversity of the region. Roughly 72% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This means a lot of them are set up to have limited opportunities and resources. My goal is to help bridge any gaps of inequality my students may have in being prepared for the future and get the most out of their education!

My Project

The reading culture in my classroom has been my class’s proudest achievement this school year. The classroom pride of reading all the books and maintaining our classroom library is the center of my students’ independent reading time. Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care. Because they have taken such pride in the classroom library, they wanted to create a project to add books they all had a say in.

The quote, “Reading gives us a place to go when we have to stay where we are,” is my staple plug to get my students excited to read!

These books were either ones they have had on a wish list and would love to read or they have loved reading and think their classmates would enjoy reading too.
