My students need a rich classroom library that will support literacy by providing a diverse collection of materials at different levels to accommodate a variety of abilities and interests.
Our small rural town is in the heart of the beautiful Appalachian mountain range. Our one story, brick school houses both an elementary and middle school serving 300 students from the northern end of our county. A majority of our students are low-income with sixty-three percent qualifying for free or reduced lunch. My students face challenges both in and out of the classroom, but as a team, we strive for growth and achievement.
Many of my students arrive at my classroom door as "reluctant readers" and my aim is to cultivate a love of learning and open them up to the power of reading and storytelling.
I love to see the world of possibilities open up when one of my students connects to the right book.
My Project
This project will fulfill my need to provide access to a rich classroom library with the aim of promoting reading, increasing reading frequency and providing a more diverse reading experience which will ultimately increase reading achievement. The more my students have contact with books and the more time they spend reading, the better readers they will become.
A rich classroom library will support literacy by providing a diverse collection of materials at different levels to accommodate a variety of abilities and interests.
A classroom library will provide my students with easy access to fiction and nonfiction titles for both in-class use and take-home reading. I aim to supply my classroom library with diverse books that I have hand-selected to appeal to my students, including many new titles across several genres that are not currently accessible through the school library.
