Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a diverse variety of backgrounds. They are low income and are considered at the poverty level of living. My students have significant behavioral and emotional educational needs. There are many single parent and broken family homes and some kids are homeless. Despite everything going on in their young lives, the kids come to school eager and excited to learn!
My classroom has learners from all walks of life and they desperately want to be able to learn and grow through high level diverse books.
They want to feel like they are significant, that they belong, and that they are cared for. Students often get their sense of safety and love from school and home. My students especially thrive with the caring environment within my classroom.
My Project
Students will use these books to explore characters from diverse backgrounds and meet characters with a multitude of abilities. Books such as My Name is Bilal, The Sandwich Swap, and The Name Jar. show students characters whom are Muslim, Chinese, African American, and Latino. These books also help students to realize the diversity world in which they live. The characters mirror the lives they live and the experiences they have had thus far in their lives.
Books like It's Okay To Be Different, The Feelings Book, and I Like Myself will show students that diversity and differences are to be celebrated and embraced.
These books will also encourage students to take risks in learning and to be more compassionate individuals because they will feel more secure in who they are after reading them. Each Kindness in particular will teach students that their words are powerful and have an effect on people that they may not realize. Each book has a lesson to be learned and includes colorful interesting pictures and illustrations.
