My students come in everyday so full of life and ready to learn. Each of my students loves school and it shows in how they interact with me and everyone they encounter. I have sixteen, beautiful students, inside and out. Their ages range from five to nine years old. In our school, we do not move onto a new grade each year, but move to new academic stages when ready. I feel so lucky to be a part of this school community.
We are an intergenerational, multicultural, inner city school that cares about each other and our community.
We are intergenerational within our school because we have three grade/age levels in one classroom, three clusters of mixed grades within our building. We also have reading mentors that we visit in nursing homes and some that visit us as well, from all walks of life. For example, my class and I walk down the street once a month to a local nursing home where we read, make projects, play games and build relationships with the residents there. We also have high school students, retired members of our community and so many others that donate their time to working and reading with my students daily!
My Project
By having multicultural books, my students will have role models in literature to relate to! I have a few Junie B. Jones books, but my students deserve some Ruby and the Booker Boys, too. I have so many stories and books with white, male characters and I am hoping to expand our classroom library by showing my students books with strong, female and multicultural characters as well. My students deserve to read a book, get to know a character in it and think, they're just like me! I am also very confident that by being more interested in our classroom books, it will increase students' desire to read and improve their reading skills drastically!
