I teach in a Spanish Immersion program in Alaska. Our program is a two-way immersion program which means that 50% are native Spanish speakers and 50% are native English speakers. A portion of our students speak both English and Spanish in the home.
Our model creates a culturally diverse classroom with students from all over the city including military families from the Joint Elemendorf-Richardson adjacent to our school.
We also continue to be inclusive of students with special needs.
With so many diverse backgrounds and needs, we are constantly working address all the different learning styles and provide the best foundations possible for them within the classroom. Children should feel safe at school and be given opportunities to learn in the situations that suit them best.
My Project
We are in need of a magnetic white board to demonstrate concepts and a ledge to hold our big books to support this instruction. We use our daily gathering time to deliver and practice phonics, spelling and reading instruction. We use a lot of interactive word games to solidify and reinforce our language arts curriculum.
Our special Gathering Time is invaluable to creating the foundation for fluent readers, so that they may effectively learn to connect letters with sounds, blend them into words, and practice high-frequency sight words.
In addition, a magnetic easel will help students manipulate letters and sounds during word work, which will activate the area in their brain that is connected with phonological processing.
