Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My request is a simple one, but one that carries great importance for my 4th grade students. I am asking for a paperback dictionary and thesaurus for each student so that they will be able to use them whenever they need to, be it at school or at home. My 2006-07 4th grade class is composed of English Language Learners and students who are currently working below grade level. With constant access to these reference tools, they will be able to strengthen their vocabulary skills, which is essential for their academic success. My school is located in Sylmar, California. We are a Title 1 school where most of the students qualify for free lunch. A large percentage of our student population consists of English Language Learners. Approximately thirty students will be enrolled in my class this year. It would be wonderful if each student had his or her own dictionary and thesaurus available for use during class for assignments and at home to assist with homework. While the request is simple, just some paperback reference materials, the potential outcome from having them is not. The materials will be invaluable resources for my students.
