Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing. They are enthusiastic and energetic. They are excited to engage with literature.
Every single day is an adventure in our classroom space, and my students push me to innovate my teaching each and every day.
My students are smart and capable and really want to learn--as long as the learning entertains and engages them. The challenge for me has been to make all lessons and all content accessible and challenging, fun and serious, allowing for freedom with the right balance of constraint.
My Project
A Streetcar Named Desire is one of those timeless plays that reveals the depth of the human experience in ways that only Arthur Miller can. My students are required to read the play A Streetcar Named Desire as part of their eleventh grade curriculum. While they often are initially skeptical that they will like the play, it often becomes one of their favorite plays.
A Streetcar Named Desire is an amazing play that the students often find they connect to in ways in which they originally never expected.
I want the students to have their own copy of this play so they can perform it and engage with it in creative and fun ways!
This text, while amazing for examining literary theory and literary devices, also opens up an avenue into social justice discussions that are important and critical components of a student's high school experience. Relationship violence and abuse, suicide, mental illness--these are topics that make this book a powerful tool in the arsenal of a social justice curriculum.
