My Students
The students at my school love to read, however, some of the deaf and hard of hearing students have been going to our library and saying that there are no books they can relate to. We need more books for our library with deaf and hard of hearing characters in them. This project will definitely help keep our DHH students interested and motivated to check out books and read.
I have a wonderful class of second graders.
Our school is located in a high immigrant, low income community in California. The parents of most of my students never finished high school. Many of my students will be the first ones in the family to finish high school and hopefully college, too. Most of my students are English learners whose parents are unable to read to them in English. I have several students with learning disabilities and I also mainstream several autistic students into my all inclusive classroom. This project will benefit my entire school including our large population of deaf and hard of hearing students.
My Project
I will be beginning a unit on courage next month. We will be learning about several famous people who have overcome obstacles to achieve success. One of the goals of my project is to introduce my students to books featuring deaf and hard of hearing characters since our school has a large deaf and hard of hearing population. I want to teach my class about courage, overcoming hardships, and tolerance through the biographies of famous deaf people including Helen Keller, William Hoy, and Laura Bridgeman.
I will begin this project by reading the books with a main character who is deaf.
Then we will start learning about Helen Keller, Laura Bridgeman, and William Hoy. My students will learn about the important character traits that these famous people possess such as courage, perseverance, kindness, tolerance, and empathy. I try to make my Social Studies lessons exciting by bringing the lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the curriculum.
The other goal of my project is to provide books for our school library that include deaf characters that our deaf and hard of hearing students at our school can relate to and enjoy. To meet this goal, I plan on donating the sign language welcome chart and all the books in this project to our school library so all of our students including our DHH students will be able to enjoy them for many years to come.
I want my students to read books featuring deaf and hard of hearing characters and I want them to learn about some of the courageous deaf people who have contributed to our country because it will help them learn about the difficulties that our DHH students face and appreciate the importance of courage, inclusiveness, and tolerance.
