Urban students often are overlooked and mine are no exception! I want to put the tools in their hands they need to be successful at their jobs, becoming responsible citizens who understand what they need to do to ensure tomorrow has a chance to succeed.
I am often the first introduction to science that they have ever had and while this can be a challenge, it is also exciting to see them discover things for the first time and take ownership in doing science rather than reading it from a very outdated textbook.
They often don't believe that I want to give them opportunities outside the classroom and are truly amazed when they realize there is a huge world out there just waiting to be explored.
My science students love to develop research from the world around them and present their research through various venues. It really helps to refine their communication skills and gives them confidence. However, prinker ink and colored paper is vital to creating their projects. We use presentation boards as this is required for symposiums. Data must be presented in a professional manner and the only way we can do this is by designing and printing them ourselves.
Several of my students, through participation in this science program have gone on to graduate and receive college scholarships, often the first ever in their families.
I want to continue making this happen with all my students. Printer ink and paper seem like such small things but I assure you this is essential and will make a huge difference in the completion of their projects.
