Help me give my students a field trip to the movies to work on life skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I have seven students in a K-1 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime to work on comprehension, math, science and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.
We have 4 autism classrooms in my school including mine. We want to provide our students with as many real life experiences as we can throughout the school year to work on life skills as well as social and communication skills. One thing that can be hard for kids with autism and their families is going to the movies. We want to provide an opportunity for students to attend a movie they would like and experience a real life situation to work on sitting through the movie as well as paying for movie tickets and concessions.
Students will attend a sensory friendly showing of Peter Rabbit 2 and be able to practice life skills throughout the trip.
Students will practice handing their ticket to be scanned to enter the theater. Students will wait in line to buy food at the concession stand to eat during the movie. Students will practice being quiet during a movie and staying in their seat for as long as possible. Parents will be invited to attend the showing with their child if they would like to come. This trip will work on important life skills that students will need to learn to do as independently as they can as they get older.
