Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As an educator, I believe that students should have the tools and resources that they need in order to prosper and achieve their goals of obtaining a well round education. I have the opportunity of being an educator at a new recently opened school where our mission is to ensure that students have a different educational experience that they unfortunately were not able to receive in the public school setting. The student population in our school is of a high poverty level where 90% of the student population is economically disadvantaged.

It is my belief that every child has the right to a quality education.

It is the ultimate responsibility of the teacher to instill the values and desire for learning that will carry children through the rest of their life. As an educator, I feel it is my responsibility to create an atmosphere that will inspire a student to develop a love of life-long learning, and to assist them in setting the foundation of their educational experience that will take them beyond the boundaries of the classroom.

My Project

One of the components of the Daily 5 routines is Word Work. Students need to be engaged when learning how to build words and be exposed to several manipulative that go beyond just the pencil and paper. That is why for my project, I am requesting various manipulatives that will engage students in our Word Work section of our Daily 5. It is a component that allows students to practice moving words into long term memory.

During Word Work, we focus on spelling and vocabulary work with students, creating a richly literature environment that provides essential and often-skipped practice time.

Student will be able to have access to build words using magnetic letters, stencils, beads and stamps. Not only will their minds take in the memorization of the spelling of words, they are involved in various word building activities that involve physical movement and motor skills which are part of Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences.

Due to our school being in its first year of operation, we currently do not have access to technology in the classroom. The reason that I am requesting keyboards for our Daily 5 Word Work is to have our second graders practice keyboarding skills when trying to build words. Our students will be taking the PARCC Exam next year in 3rd grade and the keyboards will prepare and expose students to the letters on a keyboard that will aid them in responding to PARCC Exam questions.

My goal is that my second grade students will be able to experiment with spelling patterns, memorize high-frequency words, and develop a genuine curiosity and interest in new and unique words. by playing with words, word patterns, word families, prefixes, suffixes, and so on, students hone their knowledge of words and increase their writing skills.
