This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from low-income families and are faced with many difficulties in their young lives. For some of our students, coming to school is the only place where they feel safe, wanted and loved. Our students come to school with their own set of challenges.
Yet despite the odds, they are extremely bright and strive hard each day to succeed.
My school is a charter school that is committed to providing a caring environment where students can learn and develop into responsible citizens, but many of our resources are still very limited.
My Project
My students are a group of eager 1st grade readers. They are very inquisitive and really enjoying reading. They have become independent readers who want to learn.
I would like to create a cozy reading corner in my classroom where my students can dive into a good book in a comfortable space.
I am requesting an easy to clean couch and a gray carpet.
Additionally, many of my students want to read at home but simply do not have books to do so. With this project, I will be able to provide my students with books that they can borrow to read at home. Having books to read at home will help students retain important comprehension strategies (such as making predictions, and making connections to the text) that they are learning in class.
This project is important because without a classroom take-home library of grade-level appropriate books and resources, it would be very hard for students to practice the reading comprehension skills at home that are necessary to be successful readers.
Consider making a donation to this project and help change the educational experiences of my students.
