Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are learning to love curling up with a good book, but unfortunately this is a far less pleasant activity when sitting on the floor. My students and I would love your help getting a few beanbag chairs and pillows so that we can create some cozy reading spaces.
I am a third grade teacher with a specialization in reading and language development.
I teach in a low-income school, and more than half of my students are learning English as a second language. My students try so hard in school everyday to do their best work, and I want to ensure that my classroom is the most comfortable learning environment possible.
My Project
My students are learning to love books. They love to be read to, they love to read independently, and they love to read with a partner. Thanks to DonorsChoose, we now have a large classroom rug to sit on. However, while the rug makes the floor more comfortable, it is still not the most cozy and inviting reading space.
I want to have spaces in my classroom that call out to my students "Come, come here and snuggle up with a good book." I believe that having three large beanbag chairs and a variety of cushions will create just that type of space. Research indicates that the more a child reads, the better reader they become. It is hard to lose yourself in reading when you are uncomfortable, but with these new cozy spaces it will be hard to tear my students away from their books. That is a challenge that I am more than willing to tackle!
My students are a wonderful group of children who are beginning to love literature.
I want to provide them with as much exposure as possible. I know there are many needy students and many needy classrooms all over the country, but this is MY classroom and these are MY students. I just want to do everything that I can to make sure they succeed.
