My students come from a variety of backgrounds but all have one thing in common. They are all English language learners. Some have only been in the country for a couple of weeks, while others were born here but only began learning English when they enrolled in school. I work with them to learn academic English so that they can be successful in their mainstream classes.
My students are a highly motivated group that believes in the purpose and rewards of education despite the challenges they face as language minorities in a high poverty school.
Some of my students did not learn to read and write in their first language, while others are strong students in their native language and are able to use those skills to help them learn English. But we work together as a family to build the language skills needed to thrive in school and beyond.
When students are able to read and write in a position of their choosing, I have found that they are more productive and focused as opposed to when they are confined to a desk. Bean bag chairs are an ideal alternative to traditional desks.
Many of my students have had interrupted formal education and been out of school for years before immigrating to the US so sitting in a desk for eight hours a day is a real challenge.
By being comfortable and relaxed in my classroom they can get down to the real work of learning English. Please help bring this reality to life for my students.
