Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students struggle with a wide variety of issues, from language barriers to homelessness and everything else possible, and just making it to school can be a huge victory in itself. Despite all of that, my students work so hard to be successful so they can make their families proud.
Many of my students work around the clock: school, caring for family, job, repeat.
Their work ethic in class is admirable and impressive, and I want to do everything in my power to help them.
My Project
Flexible seating in my classroom will allow my students to have some choice and some comfort in my classroom. Although I currently have a cozy lighting setup in my room, my seating options for my students are limited to the desks or the concrete floor. When we shift into reading or writing time, I offer them the option to move to different locations in my room (next to a window, by a lamp, in a darker space, etc.), but it is still the same chair.
When there is a comfy space available, my students' desire to work and work well skyrockets.
I don't have a lot of space in my room, but a couple of saucer chairs will make it easy to provide more comfortable seating that is also easy to fold out of the way when I need the room, and the reading pillows will give my students a cozy spot just about anywhere in the room. The pillows are versatile and can be used to sit on or to snuggle with as my students are working - or as I am grading!
I have worked hard to make my room a warm and inviting place for all of my students, and these seating options would finally make my room complete and make my students and myself happier.
