My Students
I teach two classes of 5th grade students at a Title I city school. My students have mixed interests, abilities, cultures, and native languages. Many of my kids are English Language Learners and are navigating a new language, as well as 5th grade reading, writing, and social studies skills.
Many of my students would love nothing more than to spend the majority of our class time spread out around the classroom, reading their favorite books.
They love choosing new books from our class library that they can't put down and even take home at night and over the weekend.
Our school building is very old and while we are so exciting for the new building currently underway, we want to make this one as comfortable for our students' reading and learning as possible! My students are brave, hard workers who deserve to build their reading and language skills in a comfortable, inviting library with books that they can understand and that will help them break barriers and open their worlds to new possibilities.
My Project
My students need a happy and inviting classroom library that truly belongs to and works for them! A comfortable rug and rocking chairs will give my students a place to relax, forget about the stresses of learning a new language or living in an urban environment, and help them get lost in a great book and focus on becoming stronger readers. A listening center will help them build their reading fluency and language skills. Spanish language books will make sure that my Spanish-speaking students have the same opportunity as every other student to practice independent reading with books they understand and enjoy.
