Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 400 curious minds who come into my classroom each week ready to learn about art, both the history of art and the practice of making it. The students I have are in a wide range of ages from 5 to 14 and grades kindergarten through 8th.

For some of my students, this is the first year they have attended my art class, and they are eager to participate!

For others, this is another year for them to learn and experience new things.

My students are bright and energetic, with creative minds that shock me sometimes with the great ideas they come up with. Many of the children I teach have very hard home lives. Their parents are both working two to three jobs to scrape by, they are homeless, or they come from broken families. The goal of my classroom is that no matter where they come from or what is going on outside of school, the students have the same opportunities and materials as students in other schools around here.

It can be hard at times, but, with the support of people like you, I am able to give these students an amazing art class each year.

My Project

The art room is a wonderful place that is full of light that comes in from both sides through large windows. As any artist will attest, light makes a huge difference. However, with the light comes the California heat.

My classroom has no air conditioning which means that the room grows hotter and hotter as they day goes on.

The sun shines down directly on to the building for the entire day, slowly heating the room to uncomfortable temperatures. There are days where my classroom is hotter then being outside.

I am asking for all of the materials needed to place a film over the windows to block out about 70% of the heat coming through the windows into the classroom. This will allow the students a environment that is more conducive to learning. It will also allow me to have more control over the light coming in to the room so that the students can see the projector better.

To place the film on the windows, I will need to scrape off all paint, dirt, grime, and anything else that is on the windows. Then I will have to clean the window and spray it with water and baby shampoo to allow the film to stick. Once the film is placed on the window, I must take the squeegee and press out all air bubbles and water. Then I will trim off all the extra film with the 5-way trimming tool. I will repeat the process 7 times on the windows above my door.

I am asking that you help make my classroom the best learning environment it can be by helping us cut out the extra heat and control the light to help the students concentrate on their work.
