My students need to be comfortable while learning. There is no AC unit in my classroom; from April to October temperatures can reach above 80 degrees making it nearly impossible to learn.
I teach second grade special education in an ICT (Integrated Co-Taught) classroom. This class is composed of 60% general education students and 40% special education students. Can you remember when you were in second grade? You wee probably full of energy, like my students, and the last thing you wanted to do was sit still at a desk all day! Well, my students are extremely active learners!
My second graders are vibrant, fun-loving, hands on learners.
They are eager to engage in group tasks, inquiry activities, and utilize technology. In this class we utilize flexible grouping throughout the day, so students are constantly moving around and working with a different group of students in a different location within the classroom.
Each student has their own personality and unique qualities to make them so special and add to our classroom community. If you were to walk into my classroom you would see a positive learning environment where students are not judgmental of each other and everyone works together as a team to reach their goals!
My Project
Being in a large school, a lot of the classrooms do not have air conditioners which make it difficult to engage in learning. My classroom is on the east side of the building, receiving direct sunlight most of the day and has windows that are mostly blocked by bookcases so very little breeze comes through. This makes it unbearably hot in the classroom, even when it is a comfortable temperature outdoors.
Students need to feel comfortable to be able to fully engage in learning and remain focused throughout the day.
The high temperatures and humidity that fill my classroom make it difficult for students to stay in school for a full day, remain awake, focus, and reach their learning goals. Please help to provide my students with a cool, comfortable, environment where they can learn without becoming lethargic.
