I have the pleasure of working with some of the brightest, funniest, and inspiring students in the world. We have an incredibly diverse classroom where children love to share things about themselves. We typically do this during our morning meeting, where we sit together on the rug, greet one another, and have a chance to really get to know one another. Whether its their favorite color or their favorite cultural tradition, sharing information about themselves is their favorite thing to do.
As a first year teacher, I have had the opportunity to see first-hand the importance of building a classroom community.
My students have taught me that when we have a sense of family in the classroom, learning happens naturally.
My Project
We spend the majority of our day on our classroom rug. Whether we are taking part in our daily morning meeting, or a math mini-lesson students are constantly transitioning on and off of the rug. Our current classroom rug has been frayed and falling apart all year. Not only is it an eyesore, but it also can be a distraction, and a safety hazard-sometimes the legs or chairs/desk or even students' feet can become caught in the frayed threads of the rug.
My students deserve a comfortable, intact living space in their classroom.
Since the rug is the cornerstone of our classroom, it should be something the students look forward to and are proud of.
